The Scottish Play

Official Selection at BFI London Film Festival 2023

One day, director James Soldan remembered a story he was told as a small boy growing up in Devon. It was a tale about a performance of Macbeth, which a local amateur group had put on, that was such a disaster that it made international headlines. Curious, and somewhat sceptical, he started ringing people. So began a meandering journey through the phone books of the West Country that eventually lead to the making of The Scottish Play.

The film is a celebration of amateurism and community that follows one filmmaker’s journey to reconnect with the place he is from, through the lens of an absurd shaggy dog story.
